The DuPont Industrial Bioscience’s plant site in Martinez, CA currently has openings for Operating Technicians. The plant is a 24/7 high hazard operation dedicated to the production of sulfuric acid catalyst pellets. Operating technicians work on rotating 12-hour day/evening shifts within a 4 day on 4 day off sequence. Additional shifts are required, as needed, to cover manpower shortages or other urgent needs.

Job Description :

Using specialized industrial equipment and chemical ingredients, Operating Technicians perform all of the manufacturing, packaging, and raw material unloading associated with the manufacture of sulfuric acid catalyst pellets and intermediates. The operations team is responsible for safety, emergency leadership in the plant, and communications with the adjacent Tesoro Chemical Plant.

The operations team is a three-member team that rotates through all job assignments and tasks to create a flexible, cross-functional work team. The team is responsible for the safe and efficient startup, shutdown, and operation of the plant as well as autonomous maintenance, housekeeping (5S), and general manufacturing plant upkeep. Operating Technicians perform routine analytical and quality acceptance testing on finished product and intermediates and routinely assist the maintenance department with maintenance jobs and projects. Team members are also required to participate in plant quality and core value investigations, plant committees, continuous improvement activities, and other special projects and duties assigned.

Technicians are required to use desktop computers with the Microsoft Office suite, navigate PLC/HMI screens to control the process, and to fill out paper logs and forms.

Primary duties:

  • Emergency response coordination

  • Write and oversee specialized work permits for maintenance and external contractors

  • Perform lockouts, atmospheric testing, and other specialized tests to ensure work can be performed safely

  • Start-up, operate, and shutdown manufacturing equipment

  • Load and unload chemical raw material tank trailers, drums, totes, etc.

  • Patrol manufacturing area to visually inspect/monitor product, process equipment, and plant conditions to ensure safe, efficient operations, and quality product

  • Act as necessary to resolve unsafe/undesirable conditions

  • Package finished pellets into drums or supersacks

  • Operate fork trucks and motorized equipment

  • Perform analytical tests to ensure product specifications are met

  • Operate PLC/HMI and electronic controllers to run the process

  • Perform autonomous maintenance and routine repairs to process equipment

  • Perform and maintain good housekeeping (5S)

  • Problem solving and continuous improvement

  • Update shift logs and document process variables in checklists, work instructions, procedures, and other media

  • Use desktop computer-based systems such as ETQ Reliance, IP21, email, and MS Office Suite, etc.



  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalency required

  • Associates degree, trade certifications, or other relevant professional certifications (preferred)

  • Minimum of 2 years of industrial plant operations or maintenance experience or equivalent education

  • PLC/HMI familiarity and Microsoft Office Suite

  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to safely operate industrial manufacturing equipment and maintenance tools

  • Experience with troubleshooting and problem solving

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Valid driver’s license


  • Pass pre-employment medical and background screenings

  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
