Associate Investigator, Propagation Associate (BS/MS) (Job Number: 015404W-01)


The DuPont Crop Protection, Herbicide Discovery Group has an immediate opening for a motivated AssociateInvestigator to work in our Newark, Delaware research facility. The successful candidate will have the responsibility to grow, maintain, and deliver high quality plant material for projects related to the discovery, optimization and characterization of safe and sustainable new weed control technologies for Global agriculture. Emphasis is on organizing a balanced approach of continuous experimentation, improvement, and validation of procedures while meeting production needs for the Herbicides Biology group testing schedule. Capability in growing plants and conducting experimental tests are essential.

Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will have job responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

  • Plant bioassay propagation: successfully grow and maintain awide variety of high quality bioassays to support multiple levels of screeningoperations in controlled greenhouse and growth chamber environments. In depthunderstanding of water, light, temperature, and fertilizer requirements ofdifferent species as related to healthy plant growth is a must.

  • Knowledge and ability to recognize plant nutrient deficiencyand toxicity symptoms

  • Understandingand ability to utilize greenhouse and growth chamber settings to manageoperational variables for improved impact on plant propagation

  • Ability to troubleshoot impediments tosuccessful plant propagation and devise improvements in species propagationprotocols

  • Assisting with projects aimed at newplant variety/biotype selection for testing

  • Coordinating greenhouse maintenance,cleaning, and spraying schedules

  • Function as a liaison between Potting& Seeding and Herbicide Discovery teams to facilitate understanding arounddynamic research needs and opportunities for improvements

  • Identification and resolution ofconcerns associated with growing media, seed, and cultural/process practiceswithin Herbicide Discovery and Potting and Seeding groups

  • Manage templates used in the topShelf®inventory & work management program for plant orders. Assist in the management of work orders andinventory items (e.g., soils, cut flats, etc.).

  • Coordinate and execute bridge testingof all seed lots

  • Abilityto collect and summarize data on plant growth parameters, to support plantpropagation improvement projects

This role provides an opportunity to work with diverse spectrum of plant species and screening levels. Successful candidate should demonstrate ability to understand and track optimum biological growth needs of species under different environmental conditions. This role requires strong ability to maintain a uniform plant growth suited to a screening level throughout the year to support Herbicide Discovery efforts.


Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Biological Sciences, or at least 10 yearswork experience in a research environment.

  • Work experience as a grower or plant propagator in academiaor industry

  • Strict observance and adherence to required and approvedsafety procedures.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, includinggroup presentations of experimental results.

  • Strong track record of accomplishment.

  • Good computer skills with an understanding of MS WindowsOperating System and typical MS Office suite applications as well as applicationssuch as Outlook and other databases.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Willing to work in a group ofdiverse people while supporting team members to meet team objectives. Asappropriate, possess the ability to work independently.
