The Equipment Support Specialist (ESS) will function as an integral part of the Research Equipment Support Team (RESTS) with responsibility to test, maintain and support field equipment used for Research activities. This position is focused on preparation, shipping, and support of existing research equipment systems to enable field researchers to maximize the use of this equipment to generate timely and high-quality field data. The ESS also assists with training and evaluating upgrades to existing equipment and/or new field automation technology. This position will enable the organization to maximizing the return on investment in field research equipment (e.g., tractors, planters, combines, etc.) to effectively deploy and/or support common equipment by leveraging information and expertise.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support effective & safe use ofresearch equipment by users at research centers to generate high qualityand timely data via pre-season equipment readiness, user training andin-season troubleshooting and repairs to minimize downtime

  • Work directlywith equipment users on equipment training and/or troubleshooting

  • Work directlywith equipment users and/or vendors on preventative maintenance andservice activities

  • Prepare equipmentfor shipment to or from servicing locations which includes finalequipment cleaning, loading or unloading, and transport of equipment toand from the RESTS support facilities consistent with established qualitycontrol and inventory procedures

  • Develop technicalmaterial for user reference and/or training activities

  • Present anddeliver equipment training as required

  • Manage andmaintain accurate records for service and support parts inventory

  • Coordinate general operations of the RESTSsupport location including

  • Track and maintain support and projectinventory items

  • Timely process invoices and expense records

  • Maintaining assigned equipment databasearea

  • Equipment and support parts shipping andlogistics activities

  • Effectively manage assets

  • Conduct testing of equipment or systemsaccording to established procedures to ensureequipment meets agreed upon specifications. Testing projectsinclude moderately complex research and analysis, team involvement, andresponsibility for various aspects of the overall testing project. This may include field and/or shop testing utilizing protocols developed by the RESTS and/orEngineering Groups

  • Develop and or deploy equipment or systemupgrades. This may include design, fabrication, testing, installation andtraining

  • Work withequipment users to diagnose and resolve problems – involves telephonesupport and/or on-site visits and/or interaction with vendors/suppliers

  • Work withequipment suppliers to determine appropriate solutions to recurringproblems with equipment such as planters, combines or tractors thatrequire upgrades or changes in design

  • Identify andevaluate products and vendors for servicing, supporting and/or purchasingof equipment; negotiate the details of agreements that are mostcost-effective to determine how best to invest capital or operatingdollars

  • Prioritize time todetermine when the appropriate course of action (i.e., on-site, telephonesupport, request assistance) is needed to solve equipment issues occurringsimultaneously at multiple research centers

Qualifications

Thefollowing are required:

  • Minimum of a2-year Associate degree or equivalent experience is required with anemphasis in mechanized agriculture, industrial technology, dieseltechnology, agronomy or equivalent experiences in the field of agriculture

  • Demonstratedcompetency with personal computers and software systems (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) is essential

  • The ability andwillingness to work in various environmental conditions, including heat,cold, dust and growing crop fields with or without reasonableaccommodations

  • The ability and willingness to lift up to 75 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation

  • The ability andwillingness to work in various ergonomic and physical settings, includinglifting, bending, sitting and standing for extended periods, walking onuneven surfaces for extended distances with or without reasonableaccommodations

  • Demonstratedcompetency with 12 and 24 Vdc electrical systems

  • Basicunderstanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components

  • Basicunderstanding of PLC controls, CAN bus and Ethernet based networks

  • Available andwilling to work long hours, weekends and possible holidays at differenttimes throughout the year

  • Available for andwilling to do US and International travel with overnight stays,occasionally at very short notice

Thefollowing are preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degreewith relevant agricultural or equipment experience

  • Spanish languageskills or fluency

  • Competency inorganization and prioritization skills

  • Effectivecommunications skills

  • Self-starter withthe ability to work alone, unsupervised and possibly in remote locations

  • Positive attitude and the ability to work in ateam environment
