The Research Associate will lead and oversee execution of activities in our automated “smart” greenhouses for the Operations group in the Controlled Environments Department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to organization and execution of tasks for automation, troubleshooting and solving mechanical/software problems in automation, performing routine and non-routine maintenance on a wide variety of automated equipment, ensuring tasks are completed on time, communicating with all teams if tasks are delayed or need changed, facilitating and planning implementation of changes and enhancements in automation. A successful applicant will work to maintain and improve mechanical functions in automation, oversee movement in the automated greenhouse, and ensure tasks are completed in a timely matter and customer needs are met.

The Research Associate will troubleshoot and solve mechanical/software related errors associated with autonomous equipment

  • Conducting routine and non-routine maintenance on robots and machinery in the automated greenhouse

  • Diagnosing the source of errors and making corrective actions, using a combination of mechanical and software skills

  • Documenting errors, as they occur, to build a database of error tracking

  • Working with vendors to troubleshoot software or mechanical issues

  • Directing and supervising any contracted workers that perform tasks in the automated greenhouses

  • Assisting in implementation of new automated equipment, providing mechanical and/or software based support

  • Help facilitate changes or enhancements in automation to increase throughput.

The Research Associate will oversee movement in the automated greenhouse and ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner

  • Monitor plant movement throughout automation to ensure tasks are completed on time

  • Communicate with teams/individuals if tasks are delayed

  • Use software to direct movement of plants and tasks done in automation

  • Coordinate with members of CE to ensure all plant quality, IPM, and other plant care tasks are completed

Candidate will be expected to promote a safe, effective and accurate work environment.

  • Administer assigned safety programs and works with team members to ensure that all employees are working in a safe manner.

  • Follow procedures for handling regulated transgenic corn and maintain appropriate documentation.

  • May be requested to hire, organize and supervise work of research assistants and/or temporary employees ensuring work is performed in safe and efficient manner.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in an engineering, computer science or horticultural related field, and two or more years of related experience or equivalent amounts of relevant education and/or experience.

  • Excellent mechanical and computer based skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are required.

  • Excellent problem solving skills and reception to process change.

  • Prior experience with repairing machinery.

  • Will be required to work weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.

  • Must have the ability to meet deadlines and have a proven ability to succeed in a team environment.
