Laboratory Technician - Probiotics (Job Number: 190937W-01)


The DuPont Nutrition & Health plant located in Madison, Wisconsin, USA manufactures a variety of food products and ingredients used in everyday food items, many of them found in local grocery stores including: starter cultures used in the production of cheese, yogurt, buttermilk, sour cream; probiotic cultures used for their health promoting effects on the digestive system of humans and animals; and other food ingredients such as food antioxidants for food preservation and enzymes used in cheese manufacturing. In addition to the manufacturing capabilities, the site also has extensive research and development capability.

We are looking for Laboratory Technicians to join our team. The candidates selected will be responsible for assisting with laboratory experiments and activities to facilitate the daily operation of the lab. This includes preparation of materials, laboratory maintenance, microbiological enumeration, equipment setup and maintenance. Specific focus will be on Application of probiotics in combination with other dietary supplement ingredients, application of probiotics in food and enumeration using PCR techniques, and application of probiotics in food and dietary supplement systems.

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Compliance with laboratory safety protocols – proper protective equipment, safe operation of laboratory equipment

  • Maintain clean work areas and ensure that equipment in the laboratory is properly maintained, safe and operational

  • Preparation of laboratory solutions including media and agar. Ensuring that stocks are maintained for these solutions along with other laboratory supplies

  • Assist with applied research and product development with probiotic bacteria with an emphasis on culture stability in a wide range of dietary supplement systems. Evaluation of probiotic stability via microbiological enumeration of probiotic bacteria

  • Microbiological enumeration of probiotic bacteria

  • Assist with digital PCR-based experiments to enumerate probiotic bacteria

  • Maintaining accurate records of laboratory work

  • Working with other application/development staff to successfully complete Technical Service Requests (TSRs) and projects.

  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

  • Compliance with applicable company policies concerning maintaining a drug free workplace is required.

  • Compliance with all Company and Department policies is required.


This position reports directly to a Group Manager- Probiotics Development position. The successful candidate will assist in conducting laboratory experiments as well as helping to maintain a busy, operating laboratory. The laboratory experiments will be specifically focused on conducting applied research and product development with probiotic bacteria with an emphasis on stability enhancement. The technician will be expected to work as part of an integrated team, carrying out project plans as well as demonstrating the ability to work independently.

To successfully perform the requirements of this position, the incumbent must possess the following:

  • Two-year biotechnology, microbiology, nutrition, food science, food technology, or directly related degree.

  • Experience in a laboratory environment is a plus.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively (verbal and written), and have appropriate organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Additional requirements include: ability to work independently and carry-out scientific experiments

  • Ability to operate and trouble-shoot lab equipment, an ability to carry-out department objectives.
