NATURE OF WORK

Responsible for assisting with and carrying out the design and production of technical experiments. Includes testing, analysis, equipment setup and maintenance, preparation of materials, and data summary. Specific focus will be on investigation of dietary supplement ingredients in combination with probiotics. In time, the position could also provide technical support for the sales force, customers, and marketing.

SCOPE OF POSITION

This position reports directly to a Scientist-Probiotics position. The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of an integrated team developing and carrying out project plans as well as demonstrating the ability to independently perform experimental research.

The main focus of this position will be to conduct applied research and product development with probiotic bacteria with an emphasis on research and developments of dietary supplement ingredients in combination with probiotics. This position will work closely with other probiotic scientists on a project by project basis, but is also expected to be able to carry out experiments independently. Lastly, the position may involve direct customer interface and technical service support roles.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position operates in a cubicle/laboratory environment, and may require occasional outside travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Conduct applied research and product development with probiotic bacteria with an emphasis on culture stability in a wide range of food and dietary supplement systems.

  2. Perform laboratory experiments to determine real-time stability of probiotic products in various applications.

  3. Manage and conduct testing of finished probiotic products. Organize and analyze the resulting stability data for distribution to internal stake holders

  4. Keep up-to-date on trends and new technical developments by monitoring competitors' activities, current developed new methods of processing ingredients in applicable areas.

  5. Assist customers by participating in in-house visits, answering technical questions, and provide technical services to customers and sales group.

  6. Maintain clean work areas and ensure that equipment in the laboratory is properly maintained and is operational.

  7. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

  8. Compliance with applicable company policies concerning maintaining a drug free workplace is required.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

To successfully perform the requirements of this position, the incumbent must possess a four-year food science, biology or directly related degree. Project management experience is required. Experience in dietary supplements (e.g. vitamins, minerals, botanicals, fibers, functional ingredients) and their manufacture, powder flow and characterization, and packaging required. Must be able to communicate effectively (verbal and written), and have appropriate organizational and interpersonal skills. Additional requirements include: ability to independently manage product manufacture to an end product, ability to independently design and ambitiously carry-out scientific experiments, ability to operate and trouble-shoot lab equipment, an ability to carry-out department objectives.
