NATURE OF WORK
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and talented microbiologist to join our dynamic and collaborative team to support company goals in probiotic and human nutrition science. The successful candidate will be part of the Genomics and Microbiome Sciences Group with primary focus to characterize probiotic strains and microbiome communities through cultivation and molecular methods. This position will be within the DuPont Nutrition and Health division and will work cross-functionally with technical teams involved in upstream research, applications and manufacturing.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting probiotic research efforts including culturing bacteria, strain screening, genome sequencing, and microbiome community profiling. This role requires microbial cultivation skills and experience with next-generation sequencing methods. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with a microbiology background who want to be a part of developing commercial probiotics to restore and maintain health.
Conducts research through the application of microbiological and molecular biology methods and approaches in support of business directed probiotic projects.
Prepares growth media and cultivates microorganisms using aseptic techniques.
Extracts nucleic acids, performs PCR/dPCR, and prepares sequencing libraries from bacterial cultures and human microbiome samples.
Analyzes NGS data, including: genomic, amplicon, and transcriptomic data sets.
Performs high throughput in vitro screening of strains using standard and novel assays
Maintains and manages culture collections.
Operates and maintains laboratory anaerobic chambers and biological safety cabinets.
Maintains thorough documentation of experimental plans, process workflows, and results.
Prepares results for presentation, inclusion in technical reports, and for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Stays current in microbiome research and development by keeping up with relevant literature and attending scientific meetings.
SCOPE OF POSITION
The incumbent will be a member of the Madison-based R&D group, specifically the Genomics and Microbiome Sciences Group. In this role, they will be expected to conduct research as part of multifunctional project teams, based on specific business goals as set by the Health & Protection leadership. As needed, the individual will be expected to lead projects and help develop project plans. Direction will come from the Genomics and Microbiome Sciences Group manager. Research activities and responsibilities will be integrated into the overall global Technology as part of Health & Protection within Nutrition and Health.
The main objective is to characterize qualities of DuPont bacterial strains to further understandings of probiotic health benefits, probiotic strain safety and diversity, and probiotic mode-of-action. It is expected that the incumbent will master specific technical skills commensurate with modern microbiology that include cultivation and bioinformatic analysis sufficiently to independently perform such work and instruct others as well.
It is expected that the incumbent will perform their research in accordance with sound scientific principles, endeavor to maintain a current level of expertise in the area of microbiology and foster an attitude of innovation and creativity. Additionally, it is expected that the incumbent will develop sufficient understanding to relate basic and applied research activities towards business goals and directives. The work and environment is considered multi-disciplinary requiring excellent technical, communication and people skills. Operates in an office / laboratory environment. Full time, 40-hr per week. Some travel expected.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Independently conduct experimental work as defined by project objectives.
Ensure continuing project activity by coordinating the resources, supplies, equipment and priority for each project.
Ensure that experimental results are routinely recorded in a lab notebook. Updated written and/or oral reports to potential customers and to management and upon the completion of the project.
Keep up to date on new trends, technical developments and skills by monitoring the scientific and trade literature, competitors’ activities, new methods and processes for food ingredients in associated areas though continuing education and/or technical seminars.
Represent R&D as a scientific expert and resource for internal and external customers, conducting training presentations, answering technical questions.
Ensure that work areas are kept clean and meet GMP guidelines.
Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Compliance with applicable company policies concerning maintaining a drug free work place is required.
Trained in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field with an emphasis in bacterial cultivation and molecular techniques.
Position requires a min of 5 yrs experience with a MSc designation, 7+ yrs w/BSc of relevant experience. Some industry experience preferred.
Demonstrated microbiological skills; aseptic technique, culture media preparation, cell enumeration, microscopy.
Experience in isolating and cultivating bacteria. Experience with human microbiome genera is highly desirable.
Good understanding of bacterial physiology and taxonomy.
Experience in performing strain screening assays. Experience with human cell lines is highly desirable.
Basic knowledge and experience with molecular biology methods; primer design, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning. Experience with NGS data sets and bioinformatic tools is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to perform multi-task projects to a successful result.
Must be a team player and a focused individual with a strong work ethic and great attention to detail.
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills for presentation of scientific concepts and results to internal and external customers.
Compliance with all company policies is required.
