Research Assistants – Tissue Culture Lab execute on lab operations to meet quality and timeline targets, performing tasks related to extracting plant embryos from seeds. They must follow good lab practices and sterile technique at all times. Research Assistants must also be comfortable using computers and mobile devices. Most importantly, they need a collaborative attitude, good communication and critical thinking skills, and a commitment to quality. Research Assistants may be asked to serve as a crew lead, which entails supervising contingent workers.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform all tasksassociated with the production of high quality plantlets via embryo rescue,which may include:

  • Preparing media and other materials

  • Cleaning ears of maize, extracting embryos

  • Selecting embryos based on phenotype

  • Taking notes and collecting data

  • Set-up, maintain, operate,and clean laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Keep lab and work areaclean and follow sterile technique and good lab practices.

  • Ensure that all work isperformed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with experimentinstructions, research protocols, company policies, and regulations.

  • Communicate regularlyand openly with the team and supervisors about workflow and experiment status,especially when there are questions or problems.

  • Complete routine andmoderately complex duties without instruction in a timely manner and applyjudgment to resolve any roadblocks to completion.

  • Participate in protocoldevelopment and process improvement programs (safety, efficiency,effectiveness).

  • Support all Salinas Research Center-wide goals and initiatives. Interact and assist otherprojects at the location as needed.

  • Promote positive workattitudes and harmonious relations.


The following arerequired:

  • High School Diploma orGED

  • Updated resume submittedwith application

  • Willing and able tooccasionally lift and carry 20-50 lbs of weight with or without reasonableaccommodation

  • Willing and able tocomplete repetitive motions with wrists and hands, sit, stand, walk forprolonged periods, stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch, with or without reasonableaccommodations

  • Willing and able to workin warm conditions and in variable environments, including partially enclosedstructures

  • Ability to read andcommunicate in English and work in a team of diverse cultural backgrounds andlanguages

  • Basic mathematics

The following are preferred:

  • Basic computer literacy for printing or using mobile devices ( e.g. iPods).

  • Familiarity with good lab practices and sterile technique

  • Two years of related experience or equivalent amounts of relevant educationand experience
