As highlighted in recent press releases, we are hiring as part of our $12.5 million an expansion project to staff this new lab facility at the Waimea Research Center.

Research Assistants – Embryo Rescue Lab execute on lab operations to meet quality and timeline targets, performing tasks related to extracting plant embryos from seeds. They must follow good lab practices and sterile technique at all times. Research Assistants must also be comfortable using computers and mobile devices. Most importantly, they need a collaborative attitude, good communication and critical thinking skills, and a commitment to quality. Research Assistants may be asked to serve as a crew lead, which entails supervising contingent workers.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform all tasks associatedwith the production of high quality plantlets via embryo rescue, which mayinclude:

  • Preparing media and other materials

  • Cleaning ears of maize,extracting embryos

  • Selecting embryos based onphenotype

  • Taking notes and collectingdata

  • Set-up, maintain, operate, andclean laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Keep lab and work area cleanand follow sterile technique and good lab practices.

  • Ensure that all work isperformed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with experimentinstructions, research protocols, company policies, and regulations.

  • Communicate regularly andopenly with the team and supervisors about workflow and experiment status,especially when there are questions or problems.

  • Complete routine and moderatelycomplex duties without instruction in a timely manner and apply judgmentto resolve any roadblocks to completion.

  • Participate in protocoldevelopment and process improvement programs (safety, efficiency,effectiveness).

  • Support all Waimea ResearchCenter-wide goals and initiatives. Interact and assist otherprojects at the location as needed.

  • Promote positive work attitudesand harmonious relations.


The following are required:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Updated resume submitted with application

  • Willing and able tooccasionally lift and carry 20-50 lbs of weight with or without reasonableaccommodation

  • Willing and able to completerepetitive motions with wrists and hands, sit, stand, walk for prolongedperiods, stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch, with or without reasonableaccommodations

  • Willing and able to work inwarm conditions and in variable environments, including partially enclosedstructures

  • Ability to read and communicatein English and work in a team of diverse cultural backgrounds andlanguages

  • Basic mathematics

The following are preferred:

· Basic computer literacy for printing or using mobile devices ( e.g. iPods).

· Familiarity with good lab practices and sterile technique

· Two years of related experience or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience
