Research Associate - Embryo Rescue (Job Number: 194055W-01)


Corteva Agriscience™, Agriculture Division of DowDuPont™ has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate at our Waimea Research Station.

Research Associates at the Embryo Rescue Lab manage operations of the embryo rescue lab, ensuring the steady production of high quality plantlets. They are responsible for compliance with Good Laboratory Practices and must understand sterile technique. They must have a basic knowledge of plant biology, microbiology and chemistry, and be comfortable with computers and mobile devices. They need a collaborative attitude, good communication and critical thinking skills, and a knack for creative problem solving. Research Associates supervise a group of Research Assistants and coordinate activities with other groups and teams.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Produce high quality Doubled Haploids that meet the quality, quantity, and timeline targets for project deliverables.

  • Manage the daily operation of the Embryo Rescue Lab, which includes preparing media and other materials, cleaning/sterilizing ears of maize, extracting embryos, selecting embryos based on phenotype, taking notes and collecting data.

  • Set-up, maintain, operate, and clean laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Keep lab and work area clean and follow sterile technique and good lab practices.

  • Organize daily activities, including labor.

  • Coordinate with other groups to ensure key steps are completed in a collaborative manner.

  • Communicate openly with team and supervisors on matters of relevance.

  • Ensure that relevant data are collected accurately, consistently, and uploaded to databases.

  • Promote positive work attitudes and harmonious relations.

  • Supervise, evaluate, and mentor reports, ensuring work is performed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with specified research protocols and regulations.

  • Willing and able to work flexible schedules and weekends during peak periods when required.

  • Support all Waimea Research center-wide goals and support other projects when needed.


Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:

  • Ability to manage people.

  • Ability to work as part of a larger, culturally diverse group, as well as independently when needed.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Grasp of basic Mendelian and molecular genetics.

  • Organization and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Ability to bend, reach, and lift repetitively. Occasionally required to carry 20-50 lbs.

  • Computer competency: tablets, PCs, Microsoft ExcelTM, internal programs.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Preferred: Ability to communicate in one of the other languages common to the Waimea Research Center

  • Preferred: Familiarity with good lab practices and sterile technique

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, or related field.

  • Two to four years related experience

  • Alternatively, equivalent levels of relevant education and experiences
