Continuous Improvement Engineer (Job Number: 193261W-01)


The Continuous Improvement Engineer will support Washington Works Operations and improve business performance using lean six sigma methods. The Continuous Improvement Engineer will lead teams that implement improvements in the purchase, make and delivery of material and information in the end-to-end supply chain. The Continuous Improvement Engineer will report to Washington Works Continuous Improvement Manager. Essential duties include:

Deliver business improvementthrough validated six sigma projects

  • Lead improvement projects torealization and financial validation through application of the Six Sigmamethodology

  • Lead improvement projects thatfocus on defect reduction or waste elimination to achieve cost reduction,process efficiency, and quality improvement.

  • Manage and lead improvement teamsacross multi operating units and /or multi-functions across the end to endsupply chain

Identify opportunities toeliminate waste and drive continuous improvement

  • Identify business improvementopportunities by analyzing data, gathering voice of customer information anddefine the problem as an executable six sigma improvement project...

  • Apply lean tools including valuestream mapping, DILO, brainstorming to identify waste and organize Kaizenimprovement teams.

  • Draft charters for improvementprojects with clearly defined benefits, scope, resource requirements andproject plan with milestones and timeline.

  • Deliver high level supply chainmaps from suppliers to compounding plants to customers

Extend lean culture todrive change

  • Develop capability, buy-in andsupport for lean continuous culture in the organization.

  • Promote discipline using data fordecisions and application of Six Sigma methodologies to implement changethroughout the organization.

  • Lead change through lean events,Kaizen, and application of visual management systems.

Leverage and Developothers

  • Assist in training others in leanand Green Belt training

  • Mentor and coach improvement teams,Kaizen teams and Green Belts. Assist with projects as necessary tofacilitate successful project completion


Successful Candidate should have a track record demonstrating the following skills/capabilities. Blackbelt training will upgrade these skills and add to your functioning capability.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

  • Manufacturing experience, 2 yrs minimum

  • Sourcing / contract management a plus

  • Supply Chain experience a plus

  • Supervisory experience a plus

  • Quality experience would be a plus

  • Green belt certification and lean training will be a plus.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience.

  • Change agent to drive continuousimprovement

  • Effective in using data to makedecisions.

  • Demonstrated organizational andtime management skills to execute to a schedule

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Effective communication skills(written & oral) from shop floor to leadership

Functional Skills

  • Project management experience.

  • Capability to perform basicstatistic analysis

  • Demonstrated capability withExcel and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of DPP data systems (SAP,)

  • Teamwork skills (leading meeting,improvement teams)

  • Capability to create a schedule (Microsoft Project or other scheduling tools)

  • Greenbelt training or leantraining

  • Knowledge of supply chain

    Additional Information:

Certified Black Belts and candidates with prior manufacturing, supply chain, or quality experience preferred. Some travel required. Hours may have to flex to provide off hour support and/or meet project completion timing.
