The DuPont Electronics and Imaging business (E&I) is a world leader in the electronic materials and advanced printing markets. The E&I, Engineering Science, Application Engineering Group supports the development of applications for new and existing E&I materials.

We are seeking an early-career Mechanical Engineer to be an experimentalist specializing in the measurement of material characteristics and understanding material mechanics in use.

Work responsibilities include developing and conducting experiments for end-use application development and material characterization, with emphasis on measuring material response to real world loadings, in real world environments. Most of this work is completed in our laboratories with the use of commercial and specially developed mechanical test equipment (i.e., Instron and MTS static and dynamic load frames, biaxial test equipment, etc.) and specialized group-developed instrumentation and data analysis hardware and software. Work is mostly custom non-standard testing. Work on unusual samples, large deflection, low and high temperature, low and high rate is commonplace. Materials are rarely traditional and are often unusual. They can be non-linear, layered, hysteretic, time dependent, thin, brittle, unstable, and even active. Sophisticated case-by-case data analysis techniques are used and developed to produce reports for customer use and illustration of differences in testing data. The candidate should expect to synthesize inquisitive experiments to elucidate a physical mechanism or a material dependency.

The candidate will:

  • Develop innovative materialand end use experiments where none exists, or to integrate existing testmethods with new methods to complete a new type of measurement.

  • Understand the dataand the physics of the material and the problem at hand.

  • Be able to integrateresults with experts involved in microscopy, analytics, and analyticalchemistry.

  • Perform testing work inmultiple DuPont laboratories and external customer locations when needed.

  • Communicate directlyto the customer often and effectively, mostly to technical investigators butsometimes to business leaders. There is substantial analysis andreporting of data and conclusions back to internal and external customers in atimely manner. This often includes demonstration and explanation of thetest methods to the customer.

  • Work as both a leaderand team member with a group of very talented engineers andtechnologists.

  • Continuously assessthe testing needs of the company by identifying and networking with the testing“customers” throughout the DuPont businesses.

The candidate should enjoy understanding the emergence of new instrumentation and measurement methods, and bringing new methods into DuPont. The position emphasizes structural mechanics and materials, but also can include occasional work in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, adhesion, and optics. Some domestic and international travel is expected (less than 20%).


Minimum Job Requirements:

  • MS or PhD degree inMechanical Engineering at an ABET accredited program

  • 3.75 Graduate SchoolGPA

  • 6+ months relevantengineering experience (can include Co-op or intern experience)

  • Current CollegeGraduate (CCG) or up to 5 years of experience

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated knowledge in several of the following technologies and skill areas:

  • Mechanicalcharacterization of linear and non-linear polymers, ceramics, andmetallics in various temperature, humidity, and aging environmentsincluding uniaxial and multiaxial properties in 3D

  • Mechanicalcharacterization of unusual layered materials, including time- andtemperature-dependent materials, anisotropy

  • Familiaritywith INSTRON or MTS test equipment

  • Familiaritywith analytics – DSC, DMA, TMA, TGM, AFM, ESCA, SEM, TEM

  • Conceptionand creation of custom experiments and apparatus

  • High-speedimage collection and processing

  • Non-contactstrain and displacement measurement techniques

  • Understandingof traditional mechanical instrumentation (load cells, strain gauges,accelerometers, etc.)

  • Understandingof digital signal processing

  • Engineeringanalysis with Mathcad, MATLAB, and/or DASYLab is beneficial
